Founded in 1933 by City of Seattle employees, Seattle Metropolitan Credit Union is a not-for-profit financial cooperative providing services to anyone who lives or works in the state of Washington. At SMCU, we are proud of our cooperative roots. Everything we do at the credit union supports one or more of the 7 Cooperative Principles. We strive to be a vocal proponent of the cooperative movement and a local catalyst for cooperation.
For the second year in a row, Seattle Metropolitan Credit Union brought credit unions together from every sector to educate Western Washington State about co-ops and to celebrate the cooperative movement. In 2011, we made an extra effort to kick off the International Year of Cooperatives with a very special event, hosting four local bands, trampolines, fun games and storytelling for kids, and of course, lots of free samples from local cooperatives. We filled the huge Fisher Pavilion at Seattle Center with educational signage so that our over 1,500 guests would go home with a basic understanding of why cooperatives are so beneficial to our local economy. Local celebrity Pat Cashman emceed the event and other cooperative-friendly businesses and media representatives were on-hand to foster networking and spread the cooperative message.
