Oikocredit is a worldwide cooperative society. It promotes global justice by challenging people, churches and others to share their resources through socially responsible investments and by empowering disadvantaged people with credit. The Oikocredit name comes from the Greek oiko (house or community) and credere (to believe).
Created in 1993, Cocovico (Coopérative de Commercialisation de Produits Vivriers de Angre) is a cooperative of female vendors based in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. Since 2004 Cocovico has been an Oikocredit project partner. Cocovico used Oikocredit financing to build a new market in Abidjan in a time when the country was in civil war. At this time, neither banks nor microfinance institutions would lend to Cocovico. But in spite of the intense situation, Oikocredit continued as the only financier supporting the cooperative and its 180 members. The new market was inaugurated on April 19, 2008 and benefits over 5,000 traders.
