About this coop:

The Aron Theatre Co-operative is a not-for-profit business, powered by the residents of Campbellford, Ontario. The residents banded together in 2009 to save their community theatre from closing and have been running a successful consumer co-operative since May 2011.

The curtain was about to come down for the final time at the Aron Theatre, an iconoic cinema located in the town of Campbellford, Ontario. With the owners ready for retirement, this meant Campbellford’s 3,500 residents would have to travel more than 160 kilometres to see a movie. In November 2009, the residents came together to discuss their options and decided to form a consumer co-operative – they would purchase and save their movie house. One hundred and twenty people signed up for memberships that night. About two years later, on May 26, 2011, the co-operative officially took ownership of the theatre with more than 450 members. And the support and memberships continue to roll in! The Aron Theatre Co-operative is the perfect example of a community coming together to fill a common need. The residents of Campbellford chose the co-operative model as an option for the Aron Theatre; not only did this approach save their theatre, but now collectively, they own it. It is up to them now to keep the show running!
