The Lakewood Community Managed Co-operative was established to provide housing for low to moderate income individuals with a desire to live in apartment-style housing. It is located in Ringwood, a suburb of the southern Australian city of Melbourne. The building itself has been designed to minimise energy consumption and has a 6 star energy rating, as well as providing stormwater collection and solar-boosted hot water.
This is the story of the birth of Lakewood Community Managed Co-operative, told by its builders, developers and members. Lakewood Co-Op is the first vertical community of its kind in Australia. It’s a community of social housing built on the shared values of respect, tolerance and responsibility, offering its inhabitants a fresh start and the promise of ongoing, stable and affordable housing. Lakewood is joint project with Common Equity Housing (CEHL) and Eastern Access Community Health (EACH), with funding support through the Australian Government.
