When Cootamundra faced shop closures and a declining town centre, its residents took decisive action. In August 2020, 80 locals gathered to explore an innovative solution: a community-owned co-operative retail store. With guidance from Anthony Taylor of the Business Council of Co-operatives and Mutuals, a Steering Committee was quickly formed to move the idea forward.

The first milestone came in March 2021 with the Cootamundra Monster Garage Sale, which raised $7,500 and united the community around a shared purpose. This event symbolised resilience and determination, proving the town’s commitment to revitalisation.

The vision was clear: a co-operative retail store that would create jobs, provide youth traineeships, support local projects and boost economic vitality. By May 2021, The Cootamundra District Co-op Ltd was officially registered, marking a major achievement.

Over the next year, the Board and volunteers worked tirelessly to raise capital and build support. By 2022, with over 1,000 members on board, the co-op secured a lease for 181 Parker Street and opened an affordable, locally driven retail store.

“Through the strength of our community, we’re transforming challenge into opportunity.” Cootamundra’s story shows that when people unite with a shared vision, they can turn adversity into a brighter, more resilient future.
